What is an NFC business card and how does it work?

Updated · The Echo team

In short

An NFC business card is a business card with an NFC chip inside. When someone taps it with their phone, your digital profile opens on their screen: phone, email, social profiles and an “Add to Contacts” button. No app is needed, and a QR code on the back covers phones without NFC.

NFC, digital, electronic or smart business card?

A digital or electronic business card is your profile online: a page with your contact details that opens from a link or a QR code. An NFC business card, also called a smart business card, is the physical card with a chip that opens that profile with a tap. That is why the two work best together: a card in hand and a profile you update yourself.

What NFC is

NFC (Near Field Communication) is a wireless connection over a very short distance, a few centimetres. It is the same technology as contactless payment with a card or a phone.

The chip in the card has no battery. The phone powers it during the tap, and the chip hands over a single link. The phone opens that link in the browser, just as if it had scanned it from a QR code.

What happens during a tap

  1. You hand over the card and they hold it to their phone.
  2. The phone shows a notification with the link and opens your profile in the browser.
  3. With “Add to Contacts” your name, photo, phone and email are saved on their phone.

What the chip holds

Only a link to the profile, such as echocard.eu/your-name. Your personal details are not on the chip but in the profile. That is why you can change them at any time without a new card, and the profile can be paused if the card is lost.

NFC card or digital business card: the difference

A digital business card is the profile itself: a page with your contact details, shared by link or QR code. An NFC business card is the physical card that opens that page with one tap. With Echo you get both: a card in your design and a profile you update yourself.

Types of NFC business cards

  • PVC: a light plastic card the size of a bank card, printed in full colour on both sides. The most common choice, because any design is possible.
  • Metal: heavier, usually with an engraved design. Metal blocks the radio signal, so the chip sits in a plastic inlay or under a special layer. It looks premium but costs more.
  • Wood and other materials: less common, mostly as a gift or for a particular style.
  • Key rings, stickers and stands: the same chip in another shape, for example at a shop counter or for Google reviews.

What an NFC business card costs in Bulgaria

One NFC business card in Bulgaria usually costs between €25 and €90. The price depends on the material (PVC or metal), on whether the design is included and on whether the profile behind the card is free or a monthly subscription.

Before you order, check three things: is there a monthly fee, can you edit the profile yourself, and what happens to the profile if you stop paying.

Pros and cons

  • Pro: always up to date. Change your number or job title in the profile, with no reprint.
  • Pro: the contact is saved with one “Add to Contacts”, without typing numbers.
  • Pro: one card lasts for years instead of reordering paper cards.
  • Con: the other person needs a smartphone. Phones without NFC use the QR code on the back.
  • Con: on some Android phones NFC is switched off and has to be turned on in the settings.
  • Con: one card costs more than one paper card, so it pays off most if you meet a lot of people.

Who an NFC business card is for

Anyone who meets a lot of people and wants to be remembered: business owners, sales reps, estate agents, lawyers, doctors, trainers, beauty salons, cafés and whole teams. Here is what helps most on the profile for each profession:

FAQ

Questions about NFC business cards.

Do you need an app to read an NFC business card?

No. Modern iPhones and Android phones read NFC by themselves and open the profile in the browser.

Is an NFC business card safe?

The chip holds only a link and cannot read anything from the phone. It works only within a few centimetres, and only when someone deliberately holds their phone to it.

What if my phone number changes?

You update your profile and it is live at once. The card and the link on it stay the same.

How long does an NFC business card last?

Years. The chip has no battery and does not wear out from being read, and a PVC card is as tough as a bank card.

How much does an NFC business card cost?

Usually between €25 and €90, depending on the material and the subscription. At Echo one card with your design and a profile with no monthly fee costs €30.
