How to make a digital business card

Updated · The Echo team

In short

A digital (electronic) business card is a profile with your contact details that opens from a link, a QR code or a tap of an NFC card. You can make one yourself: a free QR code with your contact, an online profile, or an NFC card programmed with your personal link. The most convenient is all three together: a profile, a QR code and a card in hand.

What a digital business card is

An online version of your business card: a page or file with your name, role, phone, email, website and social profiles. The other person opens it on their phone and saves your contact without typing anything. It is also called an electronic, online or smart business card.

Way 1: a QR code with your contact

  1. Open a QR code generator and choose the “vCard” or “Contact” type.
  2. Fill in your name, phone, email and website.
  3. Download the code as SVG or PNG and put it on your card, slide or shop window.
  4. Test it with the cameras of two different phones before printing.

The downside: the details are stored in the code itself. If your phone number changes, you need a new code and a reprint. Some generators offer a “dynamic” code you can redirect, usually for a subscription.

Way 2: an online profile

The profile is a page with all your contact details behind one link. You put the link in your email signature, on LinkedIn and in messages, and make a QR code for it too. Make sure the profile has an “Add to Contacts” button, so nobody has to type your details by hand.

Way 3: an NFC card that opens the profile

A physical card with an NFC chip programmed with the link to your profile. You hand it over, the other person taps it with their phone and the profile opens. A QR code on the back covers phones without NFC. That way you have both a card in hand and a digital profile you update yourself.

What to put on a digital business card

  • Your name and photo, so people recognise you
  • Your role and company
  • Phone and email
  • Website, LinkedIn and social profiles
  • An “Add to Contacts” button
  • Optional: address, opening hours, a booking link, Viber or WhatsApp

How we do it at Echo

FAQ

Questions about NFC business cards.

Are a digital and an electronic business card the same thing?

In practice, yes. Both mean a business card that opens on a phone: a profile, a link or a contact file. A “smart” or “NFC business card” usually means the physical card that opens such a profile.

Can I make a digital business card for free?

Yes. A QR code with your contact is free to make. Paid options add a profile you can update, an NFC card and a design.

Does the other person need an app?

No. The camera reads the QR code, and the profile and the NFC card open in the browser.

What works best for meeting people in person?

An NFC card with a QR code on the back: you hand it over, they tap it and save your contact in seconds.
